A brunette method with its own name.
The official founder record
CLEARSHIFTING™ is a defined, stand-alone method for making black and brunette hair a lighter shade of brunette—without bleach lightener, without adding color or pigment, and without creating highlights.
The definition.
The language below is the canonical definition of the CLEARSHIFTING™ Method. It is written to be specific enough for the industry—and simple enough for anyone to understand.
Canonical definitionVersion 1.0
“CLEARSHIFTING™ is a stand-alone brunette method that uses a pigment-free oxidative formula to lift black or brunette hair to a lighter brunette level by working with the hair’s existing underlying pigment. The formula is placed and feathered intentionally to preserve depth, create soft movement and allow a seamless, demarcation-free, grow-out—without bleach lightener, any color or pigment, foils or isolated highlights.”
In simple words: It makes dark hair a lighter shade of brown without the use of bleach or color, by shifting the color already inside the hair, and grows out without demarcation. It does not paint in a new brown, and it does not pick out separate pieces to make highlights. It is intentionally not applied to the scalp.
Not a supporting step.
CLEARSHIFTING™ is not renamed base breaking and it is not no-bleach highlighting. The difference is the purpose, placement, maintenance and finished result.
01/ BASE BUMPING OR BASE BREAKING
a supporting step.
Traditionally used at the base/roots or in between highlights—often alongside highlights—to blend or soften contrast, blur a line or slightly lift the root. It supports another color service. This can be done using color, high-lift or bleach.
02/ HIGHLIGHTING
Isolated pieces + lift to blonde.
Hair is isolated in foils or painted sections to build intentional contrast and lift, where ribbons of dimension are visible. Even when a non-bleach formula is used, the structure and intention is still highlighting and the goal is max lift. This can be done using high-lift or bleach.
03/ CLEARSHIFTING
The brunette base is the service.
A stand-alone approach to achieving brown hair. The formula is feathered and distributed through the hair preserving natural depth while the overall brunette shifts lighter and grows out softly. No color is added during the entirety of the process causing this method to not fade. Cannot be performed with color or bleach.
Why it belongs to base shifting.
THE CATEGORY
Balayage and a platinum retouch may both use bleach to lighten the hair, yet no colorist considers them the same method. The chemistry alone does not define the service. Purpose, placement, application and result do. CLEARSHIFTING™ applies that same principle to pigment-free oxidative chemistry.
The method changes the client’s existing brunette base. It does not add a new dye color, and it does not isolate pieces to create highlights. That places it in the base-shifting category—as a full service, not a corrective or supporting step.
01 Not hair-coloring: no added color pigment is used to deposit a new shade.
02 Not highlighting or bleaching: no selected pieces, foil pattern or light-versus-dark ribbons define the result. No Persulfate Salts. No powder or cream bleach.
03 Base shifting: the existing black or brunette base itself is moved to a lighter brunette level.
